The Philadelphia Inquirer got what amounted to a group letter-to-the-editor May 20 when 100 citizens gathered for an hour on the sidewalk in front of 400 North Board Street. Their beef was the Editorial Department's decision (at the "request" of Philadelphia Media Holdings Inc. CEO Brian Tierney) to hire John Yoo as a regular, paid columnist. Yoo is the White House counsel who wrote legal memos justifying torture that should be grounds for criminal charges and shame, not a distinguished job writing columns in Philadelphia. The group demanded Yoo's contract be terminated. The demonstration included people chained together in black hoods and orange jumpsuits holding signs reading: "Phila. Inquirer: Its on Yoo". Brandywine Peace Community was part of the protest organizing network that also included CitizenAction, Pennsylvania Progressives, National Lawyers Guild - Phila., Veterans for Peace, Progressive Democrats of America - NJ, Delaware Valley Veterans for America; and the Shalom Center.
