FIRST FRIDAY MOVIE UPDATE
Our scheduled movie for October 1, “WAR MACHINE” was unavailable. Instead, we will mark the 50th anniversary of the daring break-in at a Camden draft office by activists intent on thwarting the US military’s actions in Vietnam, with a showing of “The Camden 28” award-winning documentary.
Please note, to help ensure the safety of all guests, the Peace Center requires facemasks and contact-free temperature checks.
Supreme Court Justice William Brennan called the trial of 28 activists “one of the great trials of the 20th century.” Despite acknowledging their involvement, all defendants were acquitted of the crime that took place 50 years ago this year.
The award-winning documentary The Camden 28 (produced in 2007) revisits the Vietnam War era protest action and trial 35 years after the events to explore the participants’ motives, fears, and estimates of the personal costs of their activism and the changes that activism made possible in America. A brilliant merger of political outrage and filmmaking. Concise and inventive!
Matt Zoller Seitz, The New York Times
Stirring, surprising, full of twists and turns, betrayals and redemption. If protest seems futile, The Camden 28 shows how it can be done.
