No God No Master
2013, PG-13 for violence. Historical Drama. Written and directed by Terry Green, staring David Strathairn.
Based on true events, NO GOD NO MASTER is a timely drama with resoundingly similar parallels to today’s suspension of civil liberties frequently employed in today’s war on terrorism. Hundreds of immigrants suspected of leftist ties were indeed deported in the period immediately after World War One.
When a series of package bombs show up on the doorsteps of prominent politicians, industrialists, and bankers, in the summer of 1919, the U.S. Bureau of Investigation assigns Agent William Flynn the task of finding those responsible. Flynn (portrayed by Oscar nominated David Strathairn) becomes immersed in the investigation which ends up uncovering both an anarchist plot as well as the infamous “Palmer Raids” on anarchists by Attorney General A. Michell Palmer: “Freedom isn’t a right; it’s a commodity,” states Palmer.
“COMPELLING… NO GOD, NO MASTER RE-CREATES ITS PERIOD MILIEU WITH A VIVID REALISM… THE FILM RELATES ITS IMPORTANT AND SADLY TOO-LITTLE-KNOWN STORY WITH SKILL AND EFFICIENCY. THE FASCINATING SUBJECT MATTER GAINS RESONANCE WITH ITS MODERN-DAY PARALLELS TO THE WAR ON TERRORISM.” – THE HOLLYWOOD REPORTER
