Union organizer comes to an embattled mining community dominated by a mining company and its hired thugs…A special Labor Day weekend showing of a true film classic, based on a true story
MATEWAN
Written and directed by John Sayles, 1987. 132 min. PG-13. Stars Chris Cooper, James Earl Jones, Mary McDonnell, and David Strathairn.
Matewan brings to life the bitter coal miners strike in Mingo County, West Virginia, in the early 1920s. When the mining company cuts workers’ wages, the miners go on strike, and the mining company imports African Americans and Italian workers from outside the area to break the strike.
Amidst the drama’s riveting tale, writer/ director John Sayles weaves life and death issues about conflict between economic power and the rights of working people, union solidarity, interracial cooperation, and the use nonviolence versus violence to achieve justice.
The story, characters, and lessons will stay with you long after the lights come up. You’ll want to stay for the after-film discussion. See MATEWAN movie trailer here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VCIoiHf_Lt4
