In the Name of the Father is the searing true story of the Guildford Four, each of whom were wrongly convicted for an IRA bombing in London in 1974. Nominated for six Oscars, the film is a political drama set in Northern Ireland with a troubled father-and-son relationship at its core.
In a time of widespread public fear, due to numerous IRA bombings, the London police need to make someone accountable. They arrest four wild Irish teenagers and a number of family members. Gerry Conlon (played Daniel Day-Lewis) having run a foul of the IRA, arrives in London from Northern Ireland with only drugs and sex on his mind. Gerry’s father (played by Pete Postlethwaite) is arrested as well when he comes to London to help his son find a lawyer. Both actors were nominated for Oscars for their intense performances.
The prisoners were summarily convicted and sentenced to life in imprisonment. Years pass by and gives rise to an international appeal for their freedom, as imprisoned father and son learn to take care of each other.
Upon its 1993 release, Director Jim Sheridan, nominated for a Best Director Oscar, stated that at the film’s center is a historical drama “about a nonviolent parent.”
In the Name of the Father is really a classic film about freedom, struggle, hope, and love.
