The Lady tells the true-life story of Burmese pro-democracy activist and Wife. Mother. Prisoner. Hero. Nobel Peace Prize winner Aung San Suu Kyi. It is an epic love story and tale of nonviolent resistance set against the backdrop of brutal repression, which continues today in Burma now Myanmar.
Aung San Suu Kyi (portrayed by Michelle Yeoh), the woman at the core of Myanmar democracy movement, and her husband Michael Aris, endure long separations under a vicious regime. Their commitment to each other and their struggle for democracy exact a high price in personal sacrifice. She spends 15 years under house arrest.
The Lady was written by Rebecca Frayn, who interviewed key figures among Aung San Suu Kyi’s compatriots, reconstructing the story of Burma’s national heroine. This gripping narrative, paired with the masterful direction of internationally acclaimed director, Luc Besson, make it an inspiring bio-pic.
Distressing reports last fall raise serious questions about Aung San Suu Kyi’s moral status as Nobel Peace Prize winner.
