TANGERINES
2013. 121 min. Drama. Director: Zaza Urushadze. Starring Lembit Ulfsak. From Estonia, Georgia. Released by Axion Film. Languages: Estonia, Georgian, Russian, with English subtitles. Not rated, Nominated for an Oscar and a Golden Globe in the 2014 Best Foreign Language Film categories.
1992, two Estonian immigrant farmers decide to remain in Georgia to harvest their tangerine crop, despite the growing conflict between Georgia and Abkhazian, in the wake of the Soviet Union’s dissolution. The mountain valley where they live is a quiet place of rural rhythms and ancient routines.
The tranquility is shattered by a skirmish between Georgia soldiers and Chechen mercenaries fighting for the Russian-backed Abkhazian separatists. There are two survivors, one from each side, who reluctantly accept the hospitality of one of the farmers, Ivo (played by legendary Estonian actor Lembit Ulfsak).
The fighters vow to kill each other when they recover, but their extended convalescence softens their hatred for each other, forcing them not only to face the reasons that fuel their hatred, but also the conflict that rages around them.
TANGERINES is a poetic and powerful film set against a beautiful landscape defiled by war. A compassionate statement for peace!
Doors open at 6:30p.m. for light refreshments. After film discussion, all invited.
