In this dark 1971 satiric drama, with equally dark splashes of tragic comedy, George C. Scott delivers an explosive Oscar winning performance as Dr. Herbert Bock, the brilliant chief of medicine at an urban hospital beset by malpractice mayhem, and even a few murders.
Meanwhile, the poor community surrounding the hospital, mostly populated by people of color, is protesting the building expansion that is tearing down people’s residences.
Our good doctor’s emotional condition mirrors the condition of an imploding institution. Bock’s life is in shambles. His wife has left him. His children won’t talk to him. His once-beloved teaching hospital is falling apart, and his patients are mysteriously dying.
As he teeters on the brink of a nervous breakdown, Bock falls for a patient’s seductively charming daughter (Diana Rigg) who offers to change his life forever.
THE HOSPITAL, 1971, Directed by Arthur Hiller, Oscar winning script by Paddy Chayefsky (NETWORK). 103 min., PG-13 for thematic elements, sexual content, drug references. After-screening discussion for those who choose.
