LOVING, 2016. 123 min. Biographical romantic drama. PG-13 (for thematic elements), Directed by Jeff Nichols, who also wrote the screenplay. Nominated for numerous awards, including Golden Globe (Best Actor) and an Oscar (Best Actress).
Loving celebrates the true story of Richard and Mildred Loving’s unwavering resolve and deep love as an interracial couple struggling for the legal right to be married. In 1967, they won a landmark Supreme Court case, Loving v. Virginia.
The ensuing legal battle upended the lives of the Lovings and their three children for almost a decade. The film focuses on the love story rather than on courtroom drama.
Actors Joel Edgerton and Ruth Negga bring quiet intensity to their magnificent performances as the married partners. When asked if he would like to relay a message to the court, Richard says simply, “Tell the judge I love my wife.”
The film’s tender restraint masks the significance of Loving v. Virginia, which overturned state laws banning interracial marriage and continues to have an impact on LGBTQ and other social justice cases today.
Director Jeff Nichols, wrote Peter Travers, Rolling Stone magazine movie reviewer, “has given us a quietly devastating film that resonates for the here and now and marches to the cadences of history and the heart.”
